Once I was listening to Brain Chesky. He was known to be a sharp and contrarian thinker. I realized that his depth of thought is much like I did when I was in university, when I had a lot of time for myself to reflect. Consumed with work, and to be honest, not planning my day properly, I have wasted my time from reflection.
Most people don’t think soundly not because they are not smart, but because they don’t guard time to think for themselves. It is the same reason why people say that they stopped learning when they start working – they don’t carve time for it. In school, where I have carte blanche on what I think and do. Other than lectures and exams, the surplus of unstructured time naturally made it easy to create my own structure. Now, working a 9 to 5 (or in my industry, 8 to 8) lets me appreciate the things I liked to do when I was in school.
It is easy work extra hours for your main job because the task is certain, defined, and somehow reminded that it is always urgent. For most people, our own me-time, side hustle are less well-defined, urgency is self-imposed and therefore easily overridden. So, if I am dedicated to direct their own life, I must plan time for your other things outside of work and fiercely protect it from getting creep in by other “urgent” tasks.
